Corporate Vulnerability in the Era of Synthetic Media: Challenges of AI-Generated Manipulation

Abstract

Corporate trust has long rested on the assumption that what is seen and heard can be believed. Generative AI, which now produces photorealistic video, cloned audio and fabricated text at low cost and high speed, has unsettled that assumption. This paper examines the vulnerabilities that synthetic media creates for corporate organisations: investor fraud, brand defamation, executive impersonation and coordinated disinformation. Drawing on documented incidents in the United States, Europe and India, on crisis communication and information security scholarship, and on a comparative reading of regulatory initiatives across jurisdictions, it argues that most organisations are poorly equipped for attacks that bypass the conventional cyber security perimeter. Three themes are developed: the anatomy of synthetic media attacks on corporate targets; the internal governance failures that compound institutional vulnerability; and the practical limits of current detection technology and law. Particular attention is given to the Indian context, whose combination of deep digital penetration, constrained regulatory enforcement and a fast-growing corporate sector produces a distinctive and under-researched risk profile. Recommendations are directed at corporate leadership, communications practitioners and policymakers. The analysis concludes that synthetic media manipulation is not merely a communications problem but a structural governance risk that will deepen as generative capability advances.
